The Music Association of the Sunshine Coast (M.A.S.C.) has recently been established with the following mission:
“To support and promote local musicians and music industry members through initiatives that benefit our Sunshine Coast community.”
M.A.S.C. is a Registered Incorporation. Our Incorporation Number is IA37017 and was incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 on 24th March 2009, with the Queensland Dept. of Justice and Attorney General.
What does this mean for our musicans and our community - we hear you ask? The key focus of M.A.S.C. is to unify the Sunshine Coast music industry at a time when all sorts of issues are affecting where musicians can actually perform. It is common knowledge that the last 15 years have seen less and less venues available for paid performances due to a myriad of reasons. So it is not rocket science to deduce that less opportunities for paid performance based, contemporary musical expression, will result in less inspiration for our budding young school age musicians to see this as a viable career path.
Ultimately this could create a future where there is a decline in numbers of our local musicians; a sad day, as artistic expression feeds the soul of any community. Music and art go a long way toward creating harmony on all sorts of levels in society. The more opportunities our youth have to be inspired and become proactive, the better it will be for them and all of our community for numerous reasons.
And its not just our youth who would benefit from artistic/musical focus but the whole community. M.A.S.C. aims to achieve this sustainably, cohesively and productively. The genre is irrelevant. We are well represented here on the Sunshine Coast by musicians of countless genres and many who crossover.
We aim to increase this community's awareness of its own current, huge, artistic/musical fraternity whilst creating an entity that encourages and sustains our home grown established and upcoming young artists. To do this we will find alternative venues such as halls, club rooms and private properties. M.A.S.C. will aim to run regular events that create work for musicians. Work for musicians ultimately means work for production staff, promoters, bar staff, security etc. M.A.S.C. itself will run as a non-profit organisation however everyone involved in M.A.S.C. events will be paid. We will also support members who are organising their own shows through promotion and any other help required.
Being a member of M.A.S.C. will also entitle you to discounts from many local shops and venues. Only members of M.A.S.C. will be able to play at M.A.S.C. promoted events. M.A.S.C. is focusing on producing a festival a year, with smaller quarterly events and monthly gigs as well as lending a hand to established events that request our support. Members will receive regular emails informing them of everything that is happening on the coast.
